Third-Party vs. Comprehensive: What's the Difference?

Third-party and comprehensive car insurance cover different things. Here's how to tell them apart.

Third-party liability: the legal minimum

Third-party liability (TPL) is generally the minimum insurance required for a registered vehicle in Lebanon. It covers damage or injury you cause to someone else, such as harm to their car, property or person. It does not pay to repair your own car, regardless of fault, or cover its theft, fire or weather damage.

Comprehensive: covers your own car too

Comprehensive motor insurance adds cover for your own car to third-party protection. It typically includes collision damage regardless of fault, theft, fire, vandalism and weather damage. It costs more, but can cover repairs you would otherwise pay for yourself.

Which cover suits your car?

The age and value of your car

For an older, lower-value car, the cost of comprehensive cover can approach the car's value. Some owners choose third-party cover instead. With a newer or higher-value car, more money is at stake.

Whether it's financed or leased

If your car is financed through a bank or leasing company, comprehensive coverage is typically a requirement of the loan, not optional.

Could you pay for an unexpected repair?

Even a modest car can leave you with a large bill after an accident or theft. Comprehensive insurance replaces some of that uncertainty with a known premium.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does third-party insurance cover my own car?

Generally, no. It covers harm to others rather than repairs to your car. Check whether bodily injury, property damage or both are included; compulsory and optional cover can differ.

Does comprehensive insurance cover every loss?

No. Check the policy's limits, exclusions and deductible before choosing. Comprehensive doesn't mean every loss is covered.
