Medical Insurance Renewal, Explained

Before you sign your renewal notice, check what's changed. We can go through it with you.

Need a refresher first? Our guide to understanding medical insurance explains inpatient and outpatient care, deductibles and the cover to check.

Why has the premium changed?

Medical insurance is usually priced again each year. Claims on the policy, the ages of those insured and rising medical costs can affect the premium. Ask your insurer or broker what changed in your case.

Don't let coverage lapse between policies

Even a short gap between policies can break continuity of cover. This matters for pre-existing conditions accepted under continuous insurance. After a break, a condition covered last year could be excluded or face a new waiting period when you apply again. Renewing on time helps preserve that history.

Check the cover as well as the price

Before focusing on the premium, check these two parts of your renewal:

The hospital and provider network

Make sure your usual hospital, clinic or doctor is still in the network. Being covered last year doesn't guarantee they are included this year.

The coverage limits and exclusions

Annual and per-condition limits, co-payments and exclusions can change at renewal, even with the same insurer.

Would another insurer suit you better?

Your current insurer may still be right for you, but you can compare before renewing. We work with several insurers and can explain changes to your plan and alternatives before your renewal date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check before renewing medical insurance?

Compare the new premium and benefits with last year's policy. Check the hospital network, limits, exclusions and what you pay yourself. Ask for any changes to be explained in writing.

Can I change insurers without affecting existing cover?

Continuity isn't automatic. Before ending your current policy, get written confirmation of the new start date, underwriting requirements, exclusions and any waiting periods.
